It’s not unusual for Football Twitter to have exhaustive discussions over the most trivial of topics, be it a showdown between Taylor Swift and Lionel Messi, or judging whether Phil Foden looks like a cat, push it hard enough and even the most bizarre narratives will gain traction on the platform.
The latest topic of deliberation that caught wind on FT involves a well-known debate around the placement of your phone and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.
Before we explain the links to Kane, let’s first get into the roots of this seemingly arbitrary discussion.
It all stems from a standard question, in which pocket do you keep your phone?
On the face of it, this may seem like a simple answer hinged on personal preferences, but that changes once you get into the utility of it all.
Right-handed phone users, who hold it with their left, are more likely to tuck their phones into the left pocket, allowing for an efficient draw and avoiding the need for switching hands to hold it.
In contrast, left-handed users, who hold it with the opposite hand, will prefer the right pocket for similar reasons.
The question then extends to single-handed phone users, without the need for using both hands, these individuals are more likely to go with whichever pocket feels more natural and convenient.
Believe it or not, the question has persisted for years with no true answers, although polls have leaned towards the right pocket by a small margin.
With the nitty-gritty out the way, let’s get to how Harry Kane got roped into the debate.
It all occurred after a picture of the England Captain, captured before the game against Manchester City, emerged online.
A Twitter user then shared the image along with a caption that read, ‘Harry is an interesting lad, who tf puts his phone in the left pocket?’
In the image, the outline of Kane’s phone is visible from inside his left pocket, which this user clearly found very interesting.
And he wasn’t alone either, as the tweet took off and many fans chimed in with their takes.
Aside from pointing out the sheer oddity of the question, most fans seemed to agree with the striker’s choice, as they too utilize the left pocket.
As per a majority of the replies, the phone goes inside the left pocket, while the keys and wallet go in the right.
Some pretty standard and digestible logic all around.
But of course, there were those who disagreed and stated their preference for the right pocket.
While we remain a neutral party, placing it in the left pocket does make a tad more sense, at least from a convenience point of view.
Fortunately, this discourse was eventually taken over by Harry Kane’s record-smashing goal later that evening.
The 29-year-old scored his 267th goal for Spurs, becoming the club’s all-time top scorer and third on the Premier League all-time top scorer list.
His goal also toppled City and earned all 3 points for the home side, who strengthened their position for a Top 4 finish on the table.
