Kylian Mbappé has been announced as the new captain of the French national team. Ahead of France’s Euro 2024 qualifying fixtures, Didier Deschamps spoke to French outlet Telefoot. The manager said: “Kylian Mbappé is the new France captain. Antoine Griezmann is the vice-captain.”
Following the retirement of captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, France kick off their new era against the Netherlands at Stade de France.
Pictures of France players arriving in Paris ahead of the international fixture were shared online, including the new leader of the squad, Kylian Mbappé.
Being the icon of the sport he is, Mbappe arrived in some drip.
With Mbappe being one of the brand ambassadors of the Swiss watch brand Hublot, it’s safe to assume it was Hublot’s Big Bang Integrated King Gold wrapped around the Frenchman’s wrists. The color and the design resemble the golden watch Kylian was seen wearing during the 2022 NBA draft.
With the watch out of the way, let’s try to break down the remaining portion of Mbappe’s outfit. A look close to “Neo” from the movie Matrix, the PSG star could be seen rocking a navy Turtle-neck shirt (no pun intended) with denim and a royal-looking navy Trench coat, topped off with some Garrett Leight shades.
The PSG man opted to sport Nike’s Blazers Mid’77 Premium sneakers to complete the look.
Mbappe surprises Deschamps
In a video that also surfaced online, coach Didier Deschamps could be seen welcoming the PSG forward to the national team camp. In the wholesome clip, Deschamps looked overjoyed with emotions as he embraced Kylian as if the 24-year-old were his son.
The World Cup-winning manager said he couldn’t recognize Mbappe as the latter tries to “blend in the crowd”, presumably referring to Mbappe’s outfit. Did Kylian drip so hard that his coach couldn’t recognize him?
France is set to face the Netherlands at their home before the French travel to Dublin to face Ireland in their second match of the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Though not much has changed in the French squad since the world cup, with the retirements of veterans like Lloris, Varane, and Benzema, France has a fresh team with the right balance of experience and youth. It’ll be interesting to see how Deschamps fairs with this new group of players at his disposal.
