After nine glorious seasons as manager of Liverpool FC, Jurgen Klopp announced that he will be stepping down at the end of the current season to take a much-deserved break. During his time at the club, they have won 8 trophies including the UEFA Champions League in 2019 as well as ending the 30-year wait for a Premier League title in 2020.
Liverpool have been linked with the likes of Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann to replace Klopp, but it is a Portuguese manager who is now the favourite…and it isn’t Jose Mourinho.
Earlier today, Xabi Alonso confirmed he wanted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season, dealing a body blow to Liverpool who were eager for him to become manager in the summer. The club are now linked with another highly rated manager.
Sporting CP Head Coach, Ruben Amorim is now the frontrunner to become the next Liverpool manager and for good reason. Since taking charge of the Lisbon based club in 2020, the club have gone from strength to strength under his leadership, winning four trophies including a league title in 2021 to break a 19-year drought.
While being generally easy going in contrast to Klopp’s energy, Amorim is particularly renowned for his tactical knowledge and flexibility, as well as superb communication skills. This is why the debate going on among a few fans is surprising.
Liverpool fans are excited over the prospect of Ruben Amorim replacing Klopp. However, a few fans have questioned the Portuguese’s English-speaking ability as evidenced in the post below.
The point of contention is that it would be difficult to emulate Jurgen Klopp’s legendary man-management and motivational skills if the manager had to employ a translator.
Can Ruben Amorim speak English?
To put it simply, YES! He can speak English.
While there are not many instances where Amorim gets to speak English, it is clear from this video from 2022 that he does indeed speak English. This is a point further drilled home by many, with one fan even stating he does so better than Xabi Alonso.
Can he speak it fluently? Since there are not many videos of the Portuguese tactician speaking English, it would be premature to make a judgement here. However, if history is any evidence, there are many managers from the Iberian region who have successfully made the jump to English football including the likes of Jose Mourinho, Unai Emery, Pep Guardiola, Roberto De Zerbi, and Mikel Arteta. It is safe to assume that Ruben Amorim would also work on his English-speaking skills if he were to be appointed manager of Liverpool.
Liverpool fans can be assured that if there is a problem with Amorim, it definitely will not be his communication skills.
