Curtis Jones is Liverpool through and through. Born and raised in Toxteth, he’s a proud Scouser who plays for the badge. From his days as an academy talent and first-team prospect to becoming a first-team regular, Jones has lived the Liverpool dream every step of the way.
Coming through the Reds’ youth ranks, Jones has donned the famous Liverpool red at every level, from U18s to the senior squad. Since making his debut in 2018, the midfielder has racked up over 150 appearances. Now, at just 23, Jones is an important member of Arne Slot’s Liverpool and has made 17 appearances this season. Despite his lengthy service and impressive resume, one thing was missing for Curtis Jones: a signature chant from the Liverpool faithful. But not anymore. Fans have finally paid tribute to Jones with a chant that’s doing numbers on social media even before it seems to have been sung at Anfield.
The chant surfaced in a TikTok video posted by theragamuffins, a Liverpool supporting band. They were performing at the Anfield Hotel in what looked to be a pub/bar where fans could gather to watch games. The Anfield Hotel is a hotspot less than half a mile from the stadium and a go-to for matchday revelers.
In the video, the group belts out the new tune:
Curtis, Curtis Jones
Curtis, Curtis Jones
He gets the Kop excited,
He hates Man United
He gets the Kop excited
He hates Man United
The chant is set to the iconic tune of Boney M.’s 1976 disco classic Daddy Cool. The original song was a global sensation, reaching number 6 on the UK charts and becoming a staple of the disco era even after getting off to a slow start and not making a major impact immediately after it’s release.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the Daddy Cool melody has reverberated through Anfield. Back in the day, fans used the same tune for Harry Kewell, the Australian midfielder who made just over 100 appearances for Liverpool.
With Kewell’s chant now in the past, the melody seems to have been destined to return for another midfielder in Jones as it’s new muse.
Unsurprisingly, the chant has been met with universal approval among Liverpool fans. After all, what’s not to love about a song that perfectly captures Jones’s connection to the Kop while taking a cheeky jab at rivals Manchester United?
On the flip side, it seems to have ruffled a few feathers among United supporters, with some salty comments bubbling up online. But then again, isn’t that half the fun of football chants?
As Curtis Jones continues to flourish in the red of Liverpool, the Kop will continue to sing for the midfielder, and his name will echo around the Anfield for years to come.
