Archie Gray has become a household name among Tottenham Hotspur supporters following his significant rise among the ranks in Ange Postecoglou’s squad. After arriving from Leeds United last summer, the 18-year-old has become a starting centre-back for the Lilywhites because of injury crisis in their backline.
To his credit, Gray has settled into this role with ease. He’s formed a sturdy partnership with Radu Dragusin, helping Spurs keep a clean sheet against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup. He even kept Kai Havertz quiet in the recent 2-1 loss to Arsenal.
Considering his promising form, the Englishman has established himself as a regular in the starting XI. The vital thing about him is that Gray’s versatility allows him to be drafted in different positions according to his team’s needs. He can also play as a right-back with ease and also be drafted in a deeper midfield role.
Gray is being used extensively by Postecoglou in the topsy-turvy 2024/25 season for Spurs, but at least he’s been rewarded pretty well for it. The 18-year-old signed a six-year contract with the Lilywhites on joining them from Leeds United in July (2024) and his agent Hayden Evans did a pretty good job in negotiating a sweet deal for the Englishman.
The teenage sensation is rumoured to be earning a £75,000-a-week salary at Tottenham Hotspur, as per Capiology. That means he’s earning around £3.9 million per year. His entire six-year salary package that was agreed upon his move to North London comes out to around £23.4 million to be spread across six years as long as he stays at Tottenham for the entirety of the tenure on these terms.
There are no known bonuses in Gray’s salary, meaning that £ 75,000 a week is his entire wage, and he doesn’t get any extra amount of goals, assists or clean sheets. Irrespective, the kind of wages that Gray receives at Tottenham is a huge increase from what Leeds United used to pay him in his first professional deal with them.
Gray used to reportedly receive a meagre £5,000-a-week (or £260,000-a-year) at Leeds United despite his herois for them. He had signed his first professional contract with them in March 2023, before signing a long-term extension in January, 2024.
Gray only started earning £5,000-a-week with them after signing the extension and was on youth level wages before that, with the average academy player in England receiving a meagre £6.40 per hour minimum wage. Well, the 18-year-old had his weekly wages soar to 14 times what he used to get at Leeds and ranks among the highest-paid teenager players in the Premier League.
Indeed, Gray’s £75,000-a-week wages make him the second highest-paid teenager in the division, with only Manchester United defender Leny Yoro (£115,000) getting more than him. Archie even gets a higher salary than Kobbie Mainoo (£20,000-a-week) and Rico Lewis (£25,000-a-week).
He’s the highest-paid youngster in the Spurs team, but doesn’t rank among the most lavishly paid players in the entire squad. Gray misses out on the top-5 highest-paid players in the Spurs squad, with the likes of Son Heung-min (£195,000-a-week), James Maddison (£170,000-a-week), Cristian Romero ( £165,000-a-week), Timo Werner (£160,000-a-week), and Dejan Kulsevski (£110,000-a-week) all getting more than him.
However, considering how well he’s fit in at Tottenham Hotspur and his impressive consistency in churning out admirable performances, Gray could force Spurs into giving him a new and improved contract with higher wages soon.
