Can Vinicius Jr Even Speak English?

Champions League, Real Madrid, Vinicius Jr

Vinicius Jr was the resident villain for Manchester City fans in their 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League. Ahead of the first leg of the playoffs, the home supporters unveiled a new banner that showed Rodri kissing his Ballon d’Or trophy.

It also had the caption ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ written and was aimed at Vinicius Jr for complaining after losing the Ballon d’Or last year. Well, he took things personally as he produced a Man of the Match performance and set up the last two goals for Real Madrid to help them win the match.

That sparked speculation that the Brazilian winger must’ve been able to understand the banner and was fired up because of that. However, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois seemingly refuted that.

He stated: “I don’t know if Vini saw it, but I’m not sure if Vini understands English well enough to know what it was. The only thing that can happen is that it might motivate him to do more, and in the end, it’s the rivalry between teams and fans. I think Vini deserved the Ballon d’Or.”

There is enough proof that shows Vini Jr definitely understands and speaks the English language. Last year, the Brazilian winger appeared on an Instagram video where he’s speaking English. When David Alaba sings ’21’ at him, Vini can be heard singing ‘Can you do sum for me?’. This was a reference to Drake & 21 Savage’s song ‘Rich Flex’.

Vini Jr has also admitted that he’s a big fan of Drake. They even met up in July 2023, where the winger gave the rapper a customized jersey. So if he listens to Drake’s songs regularly, Vinicius definitely has some fluency in the English language.

He might not be totally fluent or that comfortable speaking it, but he definitely understands part of the language. What Courtois might be indicating here is that Vinicius probably doesn’t know what the term signifies.

The song is from Oasis’ song ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’, but it was the Manchester City fans left crying after the Real Madrid winger’s sensational showing at the Etihad Stadium.
