Some individuals receive cake, candles, and a room full of cheers on their birthday.
Andy Robertson? He receives heartbreaking Liverpool losses.
The Scotsman has had three birthday performances for Liverpool, and each and every time, it has been a disaster.
Three games, three defeats, and an increasing feeling that perhaps, Robertson might want to leave his playing boots in the cupboard when March 11 arrives.
But come on—this is just an awful coincidence.
No curses, no voodoo, just football being its crazy self.
And yet, if you consider how these losses went down, you can’t help but shake your head.
2020: Atletico Madrid – The Heartbreak
The so-called Robertson Birthday Curse first showed its face in 2020 when Liverpool welcomed Atlético Madrid to Anfield for the Champions League Round of 16.
It was to be a celebratory night at Anfield, but Diego Simeone turned it into a defensive clinic.
Liverpool lost 3-2 after extra time, and before they could even realize it, their European campaign was done.
To add salt to the wound, Robertson had struck the crossbar in normal time—a few more inches and the game would have turned.
2023: Bournemouth – A Shock at the Vitality
Flash forward to 2023, where Liverpool went to Bournemouth on the back of a 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United.
Confidence was high, but, in true Premier League fashion, the Reds were defeated 1-0.
Mohamed Salah even saw a penalty saved, to increase the frustration.
2025: PSG – Another Champions League Exit
And here we are in 2025.
Another Champions League Round of 16 tie, another disappointment—this time with Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool did the heavy lifting by winning the first leg 1-0 at the Parc des Princes, but under Anfield’s lights, all went awry.
In regular time, PSG won the game 1-0, meaning it was to be 1-1 on aggregate.
The game went into extra time, which saw no further goals.
And when the referee finally blew his whistle, penalties would determine Liverpool’s fate.
We all saw how that played out.
PSG kept their cool; Liverpool did not.
Robertson’s birthday match was over in yet another heartbreaking defeat, as the Reds exited the Champions League in the worst possible manner.
So, is the curse real?
Probably not.
It’s just football being football!
